This will likely be one of the topics I research because I'm curious about it. Based on what I see, it appears that humans are the "animals" that are the least monogamous. Look at the divorce rate...it's been relatively high for decades. Look at some of the other statistics that suggest that we (humans) are having multiple sexual partners (frequent relationships, teen pregnancies, multiple unplanned pregnancies, multiple sexually transmitted diseases).
So, based on the stats, are we a monogamous species, or is monogamy some moral, or manmade institution?
